Alto is a town in Cherokee County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,225 at the 2010 census. Alto is the closest municipality to the Caddo Mounds State Historic Site, an archaeological site dating back to 800 CE, featuring a prehistoric village and ceremonial center. The town of Alto was laid out in 1849 and named for the Spanish word meaning high on account of the site’s elevation on a drainage divide between the Neches and Angelina Rivers.

Caddo Mounds State Historic Site is an archaeological site in Weeping Mary, Texas. This Caddoan Mississippian culture site is composed of a village and ceremonial center that features two earthwork platform mounds and one burial mound. Nice display about the Caddo Indians. Indoor museum and outdoor historical mounds. The outdoor section is beautiful to walk around and you really get to experience the Caddo Indians life. This was a neat place to visit if your in the area.
